La Consolation was composed in his prison by a man condemned to death. The admiration that this 6th-century Latin work has continuously aroused ever since, however, owes little or nothing to the truly tragic circumstances of its composition. It is a masterpiece of both European literature and thought; it is sufficient in itself; it would remain so even if we knew nothing about the person who conceived it between two torture sessions, while awaiting his execution. But since this masterpiece is not anonymous, it loses nothing by being placed in its circumstances: it also becomes a testimony to the greatness to which a man can rise through thought, in the face of tyranny and death. (Marc Fumaroli)
