The competition for the construction of a museum of Egyptian antiquities in Cairo was launched on July 18, 1894. It was the first architectural competition held in Egypt. It had an international impact, generating projects from French (first prize), European, American, Egyptian, Maltese, and Syrian architects. The texts brought together here under the direction of Enzo Godoli and Mercedes Volait are taken from the study day organized as part of the Musomed project funded by the European Union (6th PCRDT) in November 2007. They aim to compare the proposals submitted, to highlight the behind-the-scenes and results of the competition, and to take stock of the contributions made by the exploitation and cross-referencing of materials dispersed across several European funds.
