What do works of art say and what do they represent? Is it possible that, beneath what we see, the artist has hidden a hidden message?
From the vast repertoire of symbols of the past, painters have drawn images and codes of representation, the key to understanding which is often lost. These codes are an integral part of the structure of the work, and the viewer, if he does not know them, is not able to recognize what the images tell or the meaning they carry.
This volume aims to offer today's readers and visitors to exhibitions and museums a tool to orient themselves in the world of images and learn to decipher the hidden meaning of famous paintings. Since such material by its very nature prohibits a univocal and definitive interpretation, we propose some keys to interpreting the various works, without claiming to exhaust, in simple and brief iconographic explanations, the extent and complexity of their references and the subjects they treat.
This work is organized into four thematic sections: the first, "Symbols of Time," is devoted to the way in which the conception of temporality is expressed in different periods of European history, and it presents the main symbolic personifications; the second section, "Symbols of Man," illustrates some archetypes of the cultural and anthropological imagination of humanity drawn from the religious and philosophical traditions of the West; the third section, "Symbols of Space," aims to introduce the reader to "magical" places in the world around him; and the fourth section, entitled "Allegories," focuses on the main iconographic themes of the history of art.
The appendices present the literary, philosophical, religious and iconographic sources that inspired the artists and intellectuals who guided them in the composition of their works, as well as an essential bibliography, thus allowing the reader to deepen their knowledge of this fascinating world, rich in many captivating surprises.
