From October 21, 2022 to February 26, 2023, the La Boverie Museum presents the exhibition “Rothschild Collectors. Exceptional Patrons and Donors.” Designed in partnership with the Louvre Museum, it takes visitors into the world of the Rothschild family, and more specifically into the collections of certain women from the French branch of the family. Renewing a partnership initiated in 2016 with the Louvre Museum (En plein air in 2016 and Viva Roma! in 2018), La Boverie inaugurates with this exhibition the 2022-2023 theme on collections.
Since the 19th century, the Rothschild family has been legendary in the history of our societies. Over time, this dynasty has become synonymous with success in the world of finance, as well as intellectual and artistic wealth. A name that everyone knows, and everyone knows. Yet, behind this family name lies little-known personalities and an unsuspected heritage. Offering a new and original perspective, this book will highlight the women of the French branch of the family with their unique personalities.
Ignored by art history, these women were collectors, builders, patrons, and heiresses, who contributed significantly to the enrichment of the historical heritage and collections of French museums through their considerable donations and bequests. The book will retrace the tastes and personalities of these exceptional women. Sometimes very independent, sometimes in the shadow of their husbands, they played an important role in the history of art, history, society, and even in the lives of the artists of their time.
Rothschild Collections presents great artists such as Fragonard, Chardin, Delacroix, Cézanne, Claudel, Rodin, Klimt, and Monet, as well as medieval manuscripts, Italian Renaissance paintings, jewelry and porcelain collections, and African and Far Eastern art objects. These works of art bear witness to the history of taste and collecting throughout the 19th and 20th centuries.
