Within the Valais Cantonal Museums, the History Museum is the institution whose vocation is clearly encyclopedic, alongside the Art Museum (artistic creation from the end of the 18th century to the present day) and the Nature Museum (man in his environment). Its permanent exhibition is housed in the former houses of the canons of the Cathedral Chapter, at the Château de Valère, an emblematic monument if ever there was one, which, with the Château de Tourbillon, overlooks the town of Sion. With the presentation of around a hundred representative pieces, most of them on display, this work attempts to reflect the richness of the heritage managed by the History Museum, whose collections (around 50,000 objects, not including archaeological collections that are difficult to quantify individually) cover all human activity in Valais, from the first traces, around 50,000 years ago, to the present day. This publication is the second in the series "Collecting in the Heart of the Alps", inaugurated in 2007 with the publication of the volume devoted to the Art Museum.
