Palmyra, Aleppo, Mosul, Leptis Magna: so many names that resonate like the thousand-year-old symbols of the fabulous heritage of the Arab world, vestiges of the greatest civilizations. So many martyred sites, victims of fundamentalism and armed conflicts. The exhibition "Millennial Cities. Virtual Journey from Palmyra to Mosul" presented at the Arab World Institute, designed in collaboration with the start-up Iconem and in partnership with UNESCO, is a manifesto for the defense of these extraordinary cities. The book takes stock of the threatened sites and lists the means implemented for their preservation. The floor is given to direct witnesses of the recent history of these countries impacted by repeated conflicts: archaeologists, historians, but also leaders of initiatives in favor of the defense of heritage, whether they are attached to international institutions, civil organizations, or private individuals. Great writers and comic book artists also take a personal and poetic look at the future of these remains. Archival photographs, which remind us of the past splendor of these ransacked cities, are juxtaposed with contemporary images taken by drones and 3D renderings showing us the current state of these sites. This immersion in these important places of world heritage of humanity raises awareness of the challenges of preserving fragile riches, wherever they are located.
