The Mesopotamian Chronicles are fragments of a tumultuous history, that of the founding and fall of conquering kingdoms, a history punctuated by battles, usurpations, shifting alliances, and violent deaths. In addition to a reflection on the royal institution, they also mention more varied facts: the slow mental decline of a Babylonian sovereign, pandemics, meteorological indications. They also inform us about how scholars viewed their work.

Within them, two works stand out: the Chronicle of the Monarchy , a political charter supported by a staging of history, and the Chronicle of the Ésagil , a lesson in ethics and history addressed by a king to one of his peers.

The Mesopotamian Chronicles , published in 1993, have enjoyed remarkable success, including an English translation in 2004. Since then, their corpus has grown significantly: it now includes 75 documents, the study of which has benefited greatly from their comparison with other types of sources. A new edition was therefore necessary, enhanced by an almost entirely renewed commentary. The sources are distributed between the 22nd and 2nd centuries BC. They trace the history of Mesopotamia from the beginnings, when the gods created royalty, to the end of the Seleucid Empire and the arrival of the Parthians.
