This work presents a corpus of Latin texts, with translation and commentary, devoted to the history of the origins of Mont Saint-Michel in Normandy. The editors have selected the two major texts, which are found in the Mons manuscripts deposited at the Avranches municipal library:

  • there Revelatio ecclesiae sancti Michaelis archangeli in Monte Tumba , a pamphlet from the 9th century century, which tells the story of the foundation of the first sanctuary of the Mount by Bishop Aubert, towards the beginning of the 8th century century ;
  • THE De miraculis in Monte sancti Michaelis patritis , a work designed in the 11th century century which brings together three stories: the Introductio monachorum , reporting how Duke Richard I established Benedictine monks on the Mount around 965-966; the De translatione et miraculis beati Autberti , which tells how the bones and the perforated skull were rediscovered and were immediately considered to be those of Aubert; and the Miracula sancti Michaelis , which presents the wonders attributed to the archangel, from the beginnings until 1050.

Documents presented in the appendix ( Liber de apparitione of Mount Gargan, and the Of scuto and gladio of Baudri of Dol) contribute to a critical study of these founding texts.

All fans of Mont Saint-Michel will find in this work new insight into the origins, often presented as "legendary", of this illustrious hill dedicated to the archangel.

This publication was produced by Pierre Bouet, Latinist, honorary director of the University Office of Norman Studies at the University of Caen Basse-Normandie, and by Olivier Desbordes, codicologist and specialist in medieval Latin who teaches at the same university.
