An artist, innovative poet, and nomadic writer, Christian Dotremont (1922-1979) is one of the most influential figures of the second half of the 20th century. Early on, he became involved in avant-garde movements and was one of the founders of Revolutionary Surrealism (1947) and one of the main leaders of the CoBrA movement (1948-1951). It was upon returning from one of his trips to Lapland in 1962 that he created the "logograms," compositions in Indian ink and pencil that fused text and painting, gesture and thought. Throughout his life, Dotremont made his work a veritable field of experimentation around the materiality of writing.

Having passed away in 1979, the artist would have been 100 years old in 2022. This book, published on the occasion of the exhibition Christian Dotremont. Peintre de l'écriture (Christian Dotremont: Painter of Writing), presents various aspects of his work. Richly illustrated, it brings together numerous logograms, autograph documents, four-handed creations, and photographs, from the Christian Dotremont Collection of the King Baudouin Foundation on deposit at the Archives & Museum of Literature, on loan from several collectors, including Pierre Alechinsky, or held at the Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium. A selection that is both relevant and unique, revealing the full creative profusion of this major artist.
