Louis Robert (1904-1985) was one of the greatest scholars of the 20th century in the field of Antiquity. Director of studies at the École Pratique des Hautes Études (1933-1974), professor at the Collège de France (1939-1974), this historian had an undisputed international reputation, and trained many French and foreign scholars who came to follow his teaching in Paris. His name is primarily associated with Greek epigraphy, because he was a master in the edition and interpretation of Greek inscriptions. But Louis Robert distinguished himself above all by his mastery of all the sources relating to ancient and Byzantine Hellenism, which he contributed, more than any other, to showing could only be interpreted by their constant confrontation: inscriptions, literary texts of all kinds, travelers' accounts, coins, papyri, figurative reliefs, archaeological remains which must always be placed in the historical and geographical context of the Greek city. One of his greatest merits was to show how Hellenism and the civic life which was inseparable from it flourished in the Hellenistic period and remained alive in the Roman Empire. The 24 articles or contributions reprinted in this Choice of Writings are provided with bibliographical supplements which will help the reader to find a particular subject or theme in the rest of the work. They are preceded by the complete bibliography of L. Robert (counting nearly 500 titles), and followed by two indexes. This collection, which takes the reader from the classical period to the 4th century AD, and from Greece and Asia Minor to Bactria and Rome, illustrates L. Robert's contributions in fields as varied as epigraphy and its methods, numismatics and papyrology, the edition and commentary of epigrams, Hellenistic philosophy, onomastics and toponymy, the history of institutions, competitions and rites, the geography of the Greek city and the Hellenization of the East, the relations of Greek cities with kings and with the Romans. Presented by Philippe Gauthier, this Selection of Writings was edited by Denis Rousset with the collaboration of Philippe Gauthier and Ivana Savalli-Lestrade.
