By collecting rare works such as natural objects, self-taught artistic expressions, or those born of madness, the surrealists freed themselves from hierarchies and cast a different light on the world. A true revolution was underway to re-enchant a daily life marked by two world wars. Art brut was at the heart of this reinvention of possibilities. The exhibition, in a chronological journey from the 1920s to the end of the 1960s, offers a look at our society from its margins: a journey through the century that advocated equality before dreams and the decolonization of minds. It will be accompanied by a catalog, a study day, and a thematic issue of the journal Demeter. Significant research is underway to reread and connect the histories of surrealism, art brut, and their extensions according to an approach to art that would be the work of irrational or (super)natural forces.
