Born into a family of German origin established in Argentina around 1850, Georges Bemberg (1915-2011) built up, throughout his life, a collection of paintings, drawings and art objects that was among the most important of his time.

According to the wishes of the collector and patron, this collection of emblematic works spanning five centuries of art history, from the Renaissance to the 20th century, has been brought together since 1995 in a Foundation and presented in a private mansion in Toulouse, France.

It was during a trip to New York that Georges Bemberg, a young student of comparative literature at Harvard, acquired his first work: a gouache by Camille Pissarro that he had noticed at a dealer's. In the United States, and then in France after the war, he became familiar with the art market and scoured auctions, all while pursuing a literary career.

In Paris, he was dazzled by Bonnard and, over the years, assembled one of the most important collections by this artist. He was also interested in Impressionist, Nabis, and Fauve paintings, and acquired important canvases by Derain, Braque, and Matisse, as well as drawings by Degas, Toulouse-Lautrec, and Modigliani.

In addition to the exceptional quality of these late 19th and early 20th century works, the Bemberg Collection is distinguished by the splendor of its old master paintings. It includes masterpieces of German, Flemish, Venetian, and French art—Lucas Cranach, Roger de La Pasture, Veronese, Canaletto, and François Clouet.
