The second volume of Charlotte Perriand's complete works covers the war and reconstruction years from 1940 to 1955. Invited in 1940 by the Japanese government as an advisor to guide production in the field of home furnishings, Charlotte Perriand left a deep mark on the history of Japanese design, notably thanks to her lectures and two exhibitions, "Tradition, Selection, Creation" (1941) and "Proposition d'une synthèse des arts, Le Corbusier, Fernand Léger, Charlotte Perriand" (1955). Her two stays in Japan reinforced the modernist vision she had developed alongside Le Corbusier and Pierre Jeanneret in the 1930s and would fuel her creativity in the following decades. Charlotte Perriand participated in major reconstruction projects in France and Africa, and collaborated with the leading architects of the time, Le Corbusier, Pierre Jeanneret, Paul Nelson, Jean de Mailly, etc. She also works with the Ateliers Jean Prouvé, is the artistic director of the furniture department and designs furniture, including the famous Mexico and Tunisia bookcases and many other emblematic models from the 1950s. This work reveals the desire of a committed designer to develop a new "art of living" placed under the sign of modernity for all and the synthesis of the arts: architecture, painting and design.
