Charles Commessy (April 11, 1865 - May 6, 1941) captured the daily lives of his contemporaries, peasants, artisans, and villagers. More interested in people than monuments, he also photographed the schoolchildren of Allonne, where he was a teacher, soldiers in the First World War, and the bohemians and vagabonds who roamed the countryside. This amateur photographer from Beauvais, recognized by his peers at the end of the 19th century, had almost sunk into oblivion a hundred years later and was unknown beyond the circle of photography enthusiasts and Isarian historians and researchers. The bulk of his photographic production (more than two thousand photographs) had, however, been saved and carefully preserved in the private collections of the Oise Departmental Archives. This collection constitutes a documentary and heritage collection of the highest order for the history of Beauvais. Nearly a hundred of his photographs have been selected to allow the public to appreciate the technical and artistic qualities, as well as the historical value of the work of this great photographer.
