For the first time, the work of the Aix native will be compared with masterpieces by the great Italian masters from the 16th to the 20th century. A remarkable selection of Cezanne's paintings, including the iconic Montagne Sainte-Victoire, the essential Pastoral and still lifes, will be presented alongside a rare collection of old master paintings by Tintoretto, Bassano, El Greco, Giordano, Poussin, Rosa, Munari and, for the moderns, Boccioni, Carrà, Rosai, Sironi, Soffici, Pirandello and Morandi. This unprecedented event has received the exceptional support of forty-three lenders: private collections as well as French, Canadian, American, Swiss, German, Scottish, Spanish, Japanese and, of course, Italian museums have made it possible to bring together some sixty paintings. Coming from all over the world, these works highlight the importance of Latin culture in Cézanne's art and the way in which the Aix native drew on the example of his illustrious predecessors to establish a "new" style of painting. They also illustrate the influence that the Frenchman in turn exerted on the artists of the Novecento.
