This catalogue presents for the first time a selection of more than 300 pieces from the approximately 1,600 in the Cernuschi Museum's collection of Japanese ceramics.
Acquired for the most part by Henri Cernuschi (1821-1896), notably during a stay in Japan in 1871, these productions, then unknown for the most part in Europe, had the effect of a revelation, at the end of the 19th century, for French ceramists or in Japonist circles, in particular.
The growing interest in Japan in the Edo period (1615-1867), which laid the foundations of modern Japan, allows us to take a fresh look at this remarkable collection today.
