The professional career of ceramicist Karen Swami, a graduate of ESCP-EAP, takes her through the worlds of finance and film production, but with a wheel installed in her office and a vocational certificate in pottery.

Her passion for clay, which dates back to the age of five, has never left her. Little by little, the sculpted pieces invaded her space and time, attracting collectors and propelling her to the forefront.

Touching, turning, smoothing, incising, inlaying, movement accompanies each stage of manufacturing. In the firing processes, reduction or conversely air oxidation play their role, transforming the glazes and the colors of the pots or jars.

One day, it became clear that the breathing necessary for the work was her own oxygen, her breath, a primordial asceticism. Karen Swami becomes one with the earth she turns and leaves an irrefutable trace of it.

Enriched with a portrait of the artist by Laurence de Charette and the perspective of art historian Olivier Gabet, this richly illustrated work showcases his chamotte stoneware, “smoky earth” and “bare earth”, kintzugi, cobalt blue, red enamel, celadon and even “shagreen”, so many dynasties of forms, styles and colours which have imposed their line.
