At the heart of the Guimet Museum, a unique place both astonishes and seduces with its majestic presence. The historic library, located in the rotunda and watched over by hieratic caryatids, houses the first collection of works assembled by Emile Guimet even before the opening of his museum, then devoted to the history of religions. This place is today the ideal setting to display some of the treasures that have continued to enrich the collection and which, for the duration of the exhibition, will leave the beneficial shadow of the reserves.
From European books that laid the foundations of Eastern knowledge of Asia to manuscripts printed on bark or engraved on ivory, these works, in their many forms and media, bear witness to the inventiveness deployed by the peoples of Asia to inscribe their destinies in time. By combining witnesses from many horizons, this work finally allows us to follow one of the possible routes of the migration of texts, the foundation of contacts between cultures.
