Giovanni Antonio Canal, known as Canaletto (1697-1768), the undisputed master of "view" painting, magnified Venice by showing it with great topographical precision and an unparalleled treatment of light. But do we know that he began his career as a painter in Rome, and that he spent nearly ten years of his life in England, painting the banks of the Thames in London and the castles of the most prominent figures of the nobility of the time? For the first time, the entirety of this long career and its various stages are retraced in this catalogue, which accompanies the exhibition Canaletto. Rome, London, Venice presented in Aix-en-Provence for the inauguration of the Centre d'Art de l'Hôtel de Caumont. Published under the direction of curator Madame Bozena Anna Kowalczyk, a specialist in 18th-century Venetian painting, it brings together all the works exhibited, to which he adds some thirty others. Placed in perspective, sketches, drawings and paintings from the most prestigious collections echo each other and help us understand the creative process developed by Canaletto, at the origin of a work whose richness and refinement continue to enchant our eyes and invite us to dream.
