During the summers of 2009 and 2010, forced by events to abandon his regular trips to Dogon country, Miquel Barceló chose to forget the rites, rhythms and constraints of Western culture in another extreme landscape, that of the foothills of the Himalayas, the steppes and the steep mountains of Mustang and Bhutan, the end of a journey that began in Delhi and continued through Ladakh and Kashmir. With a watchful eye, curious about everything, Barceló never abandoned the pencil, the brush, the pen and the lens, seeking to capture as closely as possible the emotions and encounters, the daily life and customs of these distant lands. It is the result of this escapade, as Segalen would have called it, that this book offers, bringing together watercolors and sketches, pages from notebooks and journals, photographs of the enthusiasms and incidents that make up the value of any experience of elsewhere.
