Chinese antiquity has served as a model for generations of craftsmen and artists, who have drawn from it styles, themes, and motifs. In no other field than that of bronze has this presence of the past been so strongly manifested. The considerable role of rites derived from ancient religion in the Confucian empire largely explains this phenomenon of resurgence. At the end of the 19th century, Henri Cernuschi was one of the first European collectors to take an interest not only in the bronzes of ancient China, but also in the period extending from the Song (960-1279) to the Qing (1644-1911), which was then called the "bronze renaissance." We owe him the amassing of an exceptional collection that still constitutes one of the most important collections in the world. This book presents for the first time a selection of nearly 130 of the most significant objects from this remarkable collection preserved at the Cernuschi Museum.
