On the occasion of the bicentenary of the birth of the painter Gustave Courbet (1819-1877), the Musée Fabre is dedicating an exhibition to one of the artist's masterpieces, La rencontre, dit Bonjour M. Courbet (1854). The painting, painted on the occasion of the artist's visit to Montpellier at the invitation of the Montpellier collector and patron Alfred Bruyas in 1854, is one of the collection's flagship works and a key milestone in the history of 19th-century painting. This exhibition offers an in-depth analysis of the work through three axes: - a return to the painting's iconographic sources (popular imagery, utopian social thought, etc.) - its critical reception in the 19th century (caricatures, exhibition reports) - and the contemporary reinterpretation of the work by leading artists who have appropriated the painting since the 1990s (the museum notably holds a work by François Morellet). The exhibition will be inaugurated in 2019, the bicentenary of the artist's birth, which will also be celebrated by the Musée d'Orsay and the Courbet Museum in Ornans.
