The aim of this book is to better understand and appreciate the leading role played by Dehua in the history of ceramics, not only in China, but throughout the world. Located in what is now the coastal province of Fujian, this famous production center has developed over the centuries, drawing on skills developed since the Neolithic period among local pottery communities. Gathered within clan villages and families, they were able to take advantage of the excellence of the available materials—in particular the region's white clay—and pass on their manufacturing secrets. Dehua is thus best known in the West for "Blanc de Chine," appreciated and collected in Europe since the 17th century, then distributed and imitated throughout the world. But this is an unregulated name. It is therefore necessary to judge on the basis of evidence, to specify the technical conditions and the historical context of this particular production. And, among other things, to compare it with the “blue and white” with underglaze painted decoration, which were also abundantly produced in Dehua and distributed.

It is also an opportunity to pay a fitting tribute to this major personality who played an essential role as a bridge between the tradition inherited from his masters and today's creation. At once artist, workshop manager, engineer, collector, art historian, this multi-talented figure with encyclopedic knowledge never stopped revitalizing the tradition of his hometown. Attentive to the diversity and quality of local productions, he was able very early on to envisage the possibilities of a renewal of production and to propose innovations.
