China is a central theme in the work of Bertrand Meunier, a member of the French collective Tendance Floue. This first monograph by the photographer is the culmination of a long-term project carried out in this country, first on the changes in the Chinese farming and industrial world from 1998 with the series Erased, then REC on the excessive surveillance society and the recent protest events in Hong Kong.
Through these field studies conducted over more than twenty years, Bertrand Meunier scrutinizes and examines the evolution of the Middle Kingdom and draws up an uncompromising inventory of this country where social transformations exacerbate inequalities. He thus focuses on peripheral cities, the marginalized, and the harshness of everyday life. Favoring the long term, he adopts a documentary approach far removed from current events, focusing on a sociological analysis where information is often found outside the framework.
Through powerful, meticulously composed images, he constructs narrative sequences in a cinematic approach, imbued with a dreamlike quality. The choice of black and white, contrasting tones, film that brings out the grain, the material of these industrial zones oscillating between ghostly gray and charcoal black, bear witness to a universe that is at once harsh, poetic and tormented, which corresponds to his subjective vision of Chinese society.
Text by Pierre Haski, French journalist specializing in China
