Bartholdi (1834-1904) set off from Marseille on the Osiris, on a long journey from November 1, 1855 to mid-June 1856 to Egypt and Yemen. This group trip, notably with Jean-Léon Gérôme (1824-1904), was itinerant. He arrived in Alexandria, stopped in Cairo, and sailed back up in a dahabieh to the sources of the Nile as far as Aswan. During these study stops, the artist met many picturesque and colorful characters. A thousand and one adventures happened to him, small or large, funny or insignificant. Upon his return to Cairo in April 1856, the tireless Bartholdi set off almost immediately for a solo expedition to Yemen. This exhibition, conceived at the junction of the history of taste and the history of art, will recount this journey against the backdrop of the drilling of the Suez Canal, the development of gigantic archaeological excavations, and competition between the English and the French. The exhibition, thanks to 100 drawings, Bartholdi's first calotypes (around twenty), unpublished archival documents, and rare and precious books that Bartholdi consulted to prepare for his journey, will retrace this singular expedition. This collection of drawings, undoubtedly one of the most complete and precious on the artist, will interact with fascinating archaeological objects from Ancient Egypt.
