The Baouît monastic site in Middle Egypt has been the subject of archaeological excavations since 2003, conducted jointly by the IFAO and the Louvre Museum. Spanning from the Byzantine period preceding the Conquest to the first centuries of the Arab era, it serves as a broader reference in the Mediterranean Basin region.

Study days organized in June 2018 provided an opportunity to take stock of recent in situ archaeological activity and the abundant research generated by researchers and academics internationally. The publication of the proceedings in two parts, archaeology and texts, compares the initial results of field campaigns over a decade with current work carried out in parallel in the papyrological field across numerous collections.

The seventeen articles collected in this volume present the results of recent and unpublished research, processed by different specialists who, most often, publish separately; the originality of this work is to bring them together in a multidisciplinary approach, also allowing for methodological reflection on the contribution and, sometimes, the limits of the combination of sources.
