Formerly the residence of the governors of the oasis under the 6th Dynasty, the city of Ayn Asil was abandoned around 2100 BC. Under the 13th Dynasty, the southern part of the site was reoccupied. Dwellings were built on the sandy ruins from the end of the Old Kingdom. The fragmentary remains of this settlement consist of three groups of residential structures dominated by food storage and production areas, particularly silos and bakeries. We have interpreted them as large rural houses forming a hamlet, whose occupation lasted for the duration of the slow and partial evolution of ceramics, from a first phase dated around 1700 BC to a second, clearly established around 1600 BC. The catalogue of containers, representative of all uses, allows us to compare the Dakhla ceramics with the material from the major regions of Egypt, as defined for the 2nd Intermediate Period.
