In the Nile Valley, beyond the borders of the Egyptian Empire, lies Nubia, a fascinating and mysterious territory from which emerged the famous Black Pharaohs in the 7th century BC. Kerma is one of the centers of this region, where the intensity of archaeological research conducted by a Swiss team for nearly 40 years has made it possible to trace the trajectory of ancient societies over the last 10,000 years, from the first sedentary settlements to the emergence of vast kingdoms that rivaled the power of the Egyptians. The exhibition "The Origins of the Black Pharaohs" and this catalog deal with the development of prehistoric and ancient societies in Nubia over the long term. More than a simple presentation of objects illustrating the subject, the objective is to recreate the atmosphere of the country and the archaeological excavations carried out in the field, by combining the two main sources of information available to the archaeologist. On the one hand, the world of the dead and its impressive funeral rituals, on the other, the world of the living, from village settlements to the creation of the first cities in Black Africa. Funerary and everyday objects, reconstructions, models, videos, and presentations from the Kerma Museum are all windows that allow us to restore the richness and diversity of Nubian archaeology.
