The self-portrait is a purely European genre of visual art and an extremely contemporary one: from the mirror portraits of the late Middle Ages to the proud self-representations of the Baroque era or the image of the sensitive ego of the Romantics, self-identity in images opens up a series of themes that extends to the current phenomenon of the selfie shared millions of times on the global network. The exhibition and the catalogue were conceived as part of an international cooperation between the museums of Karlsruhe, Lyon and Edinburgh. A collection of around one hundred works from their collections (paintings, drawings, prints and videos) is devoted to the diverse motifs of human self-questioning and self-presentation.
