The exhibition will feature some sixty sculptures and as many drawings, paintings, and engravings. The works will be presented in a unique dialogue with those of the artists who influenced him during his time in Belgium. Belgium is Rodin's birthplace; it is where the artist was born. The six years of expatriation in Belgium between 1871 and 1877 must be considered seminal for the artist.
He then changed status: from a worker-craftsman in the service of Carrier-Belleuse, he became a fully independent artist. But Belgium was also the country where his first solo exhibition was held, in 1899, a traveling exhibition that began in Brussels. Rodin was then in full possession of his means: the following year, moreover, he did not hesitate to build a pavilion on the Place de l'Alma in Paris to present his entire work to the public attracted by the Universal Exhibition.
The Mons exhibition aims to highlight his artistic journey during this period of around 25 years, at the end of which he emerged as both one of the major figures in the Parisian artistic panorama and a precursor of the 20th century.
