Rediscovering in its reserves a set of textile objects that had to be identified and restored, the Dobrée Museum seized the opportunity to publish a beautiful book whose title claims to make us aware of the customs and splendors of a society through its textile art. Along the Nile does not just tell us the complex history of the museum's collection and the restoration work carried out at the time, but also presents to us in all its diversity this textile art which especially honors the civilization of Egypt after the pharaohs and before Islam, that is to say from the 2nd to the 12th century. A land of excellence in the first Christian centuries, leaving us the memory of so many monks, martyrs and great figures, Egypt produced art forms with particular characteristics evoked here in their relationship with fabrics, one of the most original productions of Coptic art as much by the richness of iconographic inspiration as by the industrial techniques and the refinement of the uses. Initially used as clothing or upholstery, they were later used as shrouds when embalming and mummification practices were abandoned during the 3rd century. Particularly well preserved due to exceptional climatic and geological conditions, they were exhumed by the thousands from Egyptian soil. Many exceptional pieces, including around thirty preserved at the Dobrée Museum, are presented here to all those who are curious, whether they are simple visitors, confirmed amateurs or researchers, and put back into context under the direction of the curators of the Egyptian Antiquities Department of the Louvre Museum, Marie-Hélène Rutschowscaya and Dominique Bénazeth, with the participation of the Musée National du Moyen Age - Thermes de Cluny, the Musée des Tissus de Lyon, the Musée d'Orsay and the Union Centrale des Arts Décoratifs de Paris, who were among the lenders of a joint exhibition in 2001. Contents: The eventful history of the Egyptian collection of the Dobrée Museum by Marie-Hélène Santrot Coptic history and culture by Marie-Hélène Rutschowscaya Weaving technique: tools, technical processes by Roberta Cortopassi The use of fabrics for clothing and furnishings by Dominique Bénazeth Images of Coptic fabrics: the themes Nilotic, Greco-Roman mythology, Christian themes by Christiane Lyoen-Cahen Stylistic trends and dating problems: the rider, the dancer by Dominique Bénazeth Discovering Christian Egypt in the 19th century by Florence Calament Resurrection of Coptic fabrics by Marie-Hélène Rutschowscaya Elements of the architectural decoration of the monastery of Baouit by Dominique Bénazeth Restorations carried out on the collections of the Dobrée museum by the restorers who carried them out (7 notices) Catalogue 133 illustrated notices inserted at the end of the essays that their object informs
