Biosphere reserves aim to reduce biodiversity loss through innovative approaches, drawing on research and environmental monitoring. They are also tools for knowledge, education, and training on the best ways to ensure human communities coexist with biodiversity. In France, there are 16 biosphere reserves, including three island and marine ones: the Molène, Tuamotu, and Guadeloupe archipelagos.
Created in 1988, the Iroise Sea Biosphere Reserve is jointly managed by the Armorique Regional Natural Park and the Iroise Marine Natural Park. It covers nearly 100,000 hectares.
This atlas provides an overview of recent knowledge acquired in the relevant area and in all fields, following a multidisciplinary approach. In nearly 300 color pages and 600 illustrations (magnificent landscape, underwater and animal photographs + maps, graphs, tables, etc.), elegantly laid out in a "coffee table" format, it is aimed at the general public.
The objective is to better understand an ecosystem subject to major changes under the constraint of global changes. But also to discover the colonies of dolphins and seals, the seabirds, the large kelp and their harvest, the prehistoric occupation of the area… 5 main parts: Geological history; Marine and terrestrial habitats; Structure of the water column; Emblematic species; Human activities. Recognized at the international level by the UNESCO label, the results described in the atlas explain the major challenges of biodiversity conservation in the Iroise Sea, for the protection of these precious natural spaces, living and carrying an identity and a long and strong history.
