Generous and inspired, the industrialist Lionel Fournier offered the Guimet National Museum of Asian Arts around a hundred works of art illustrating the most esoteric aspects of Tibetan Buddhism in 1990. This gift was intended to promote a qualitative leap in the vision of a wide audience, because the collection gives pride of place to powerful and profound works, devoted in particular to so-called "fierce" divinities - until then, the existing collection of the museum was confined to relatively peaceful iconographies. The book, of which the vast majority of the photos are in color, allows to discover in its entirety the prestigious donation, of which only 19 works are exhibited in the museum's rooms. The major regions where culture has left its mark (India, Nepal, China) are addressed in turn, as well as specific aspects, such as the black-ground paintings, little published until now, and the ritual objects, among which we will note, equally impressive, an oracle diadem and an exorcism apron. Browsing through this book is like entering a secret universe, where Gilles Béguin, former chief curator of the museum, guides us. --Colette-Rebecca Estin
