This book recalls a rare artistic moment, when French Art Deco seduced China under the national government of Sun Yat-Sen in the early 1920s. At the 1925 Exposition des Arts Décoratifs in Paris, the Chinese pavilion attracted attention, while its architect Liu Jipiao soon after imported French Art Deco into his country. The author of this work endeavors to present the reciprocal influences on fashion, photography, cinema, architecture, and the decorative arts. French artists, such as Süe and Mare, Jacques-Emile Ruhlmann, René Buthaud, and Gaston Suisse, learned about the art of lacquerware or reinterpreted motifs from Chinese art, while Chinese artists borrowed geometric forms from Art Deco and introduced their own ideograms.
