Between the arms of the Louvre Palace, three blossoming nymphs offer themselves to the contemplation of strollers in the Jardin du Carrousel. Most, no doubt, are unaware of the eventful history of this work by Aristide Maillol (1861-1944).
In 1937, at the Paris International Exhibition, the artist, then at the height of his career, was given three rooms in the Exhibition of Masters of Independent Art. At the age of seventy-five, he decided to mark the event by creating his most ambitious work: The Three Nymphs. This variation on the ancient theme of the Three Graces would contribute to his consecration as "the greatest living French sculptor."
The work attracted photographers: Brassaï, Erwin Blumenfeld, Robert Doisneau. During the Occupation, it also aroused the interest of the Nazis, who seized it. It was only after a thorough investigation that its history, with its many twists and turns, was able to be traced. Installed at the Carrousel since 1965, at the initiative of André Malraux and Dina Vierny, this group continues to fascinate with its timeless simplicity and grace.
