This book was published on the occasion of the retrospective marking the centenary of the birth of Antoni Tàpies (Barcelona, 1923-2012), a key figure in post-war modern art. It presents numerous key works from each of the artist's periods: after his self-portraits and works influenced by surrealism and Dadaism, Tàpies produced his first matiériste paintings in the 1950s, which incorporated raw materials, stains, and signs. Formal and material experimentation was at the heart of his practice and continued until the 1990s. Admiring these paintings, drawings, collages, and sculptures also means exploring the mystical, philosophical, and political dimensions of Antoni Tàpies's universe.
The exhibition Antoni Tapies. The practice of art was organized by the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofia, Madrid, in collaboration with Bozar - Palais des Beaux-Arts, Brussels and the Fundació Antoni Tàpies, Barcelona, in the framework of the Spanish Presidency of the Council of the European Union and the Tàpies Year. This catalogue includes an essay by Manuel J. Borja-Villel and a selection of Antoni Tàpies's writings.
