Born in Barcelona in 1913, Antoni Clavé was confronted with war from 1937. The theme of the warrior is found very early in his art and is among the subjects which brought him public recognition in Paris in 1958.
In contact with African sculptures and masks that Clavé surrounds himself with in his studios, the figure of the warrior remains fundamental. The artist's favorite title and subject, the warrior, like a refrain, can be read as a remanent image in Clavé's sculptures, paintings, and textile or wood assemblages until the early 2000s. This theme haunted him throughout his life.
It is through the prism of the memory of African masks that this catalog offers an original look at the art of Antoni Clavé. Homage, admiration, appropriation, his links with the arts of Africa are multiple. Clavé also takes up his artistic weapons to affirm his pictorial identity of absolute modernity, timeless and universal.
