Frits Lugt (1884-1970) not only built an impressive art collection, consisting primarily of old master drawings, prints, and artists' letters, but also had a keen eye for the craftsmanship of antiquity. He thus assembled the objects now presented in the salons of the Hôtel Turgot, which houses the Fondation Custodia founded by Lugt. This three-volume catalogue raisonné describes Egyptian antiquities, Greek vases, terracotta objects, and sculptures, as well as Roman glass, in a way that makes the subject accessible to both specialists and the general public. It offers an overview of the history of these works, their forms, and their iconography. Many pieces are published here for the very first time. Egyptian antiquities quickly aroused the interest of Frits Lugt, who began his collection after his trip to Egypt in 1909, from which he brought back two statuettes of Horus and Thoth. The Egyptian objects collection comprises 137 pieces collected over a period of 60 years and dating from the 18th to the 20th dynasties. The catalog is divided into four themes: gods, kings, men, and animals. Each object is illustrated with one or more photographs and accompanied by a descriptive text. The Greek vase collection consists of around fifty pieces, mostly of Attic production. As with the ancient glass collection, with objects ranging from the 14th century BC to the 15th century AD, Lugt does not seem to have sought any particular coherence in his collection. He was more interested in the aesthetic aspect of the objects and was particularly attentive to their perfect preservation.
