Born in Stockholm, Anna-Eva Bergman trained in Oslo, Vienna, and then Paris in 1929. Inspired by New Objectivity – like Georges Grosz or Otto Dix – it was in 1946, after having engaged in illustration and writing, that she began to paint intensely again but in a non-figurative vein. Over the years, she installed a very singular abstract language, based on a vocabulary of simple forms inspired by both landscapes and Nordic mythologies .
Although celebrated and exhibited worldwide during her lifetime, Anna-Eva Bergman's work now demands to be reconsidered more broadly within the field of art history. This work sheds decisive light on the rediscovery of this artist, notably on his particular relationship to the landscape, the radical purity of colors and forms, as well as the very specific use of a material that has become his signature: gold and silver leaf
