The diversity of the work of ceramist André Metthey (1871-1920), renowned for his collaboration with the Fauve painters, remains to be discovered. This book highlights all of his creations, from his early stoneware to his richly decorated glazed earthenware. Constituting the first monograph dedicated to the artist, it aims, a century after the retrospective at the Palais Galliera and following the illustrated collection, André Metthey, décorateur et céramiste , by Henri Clouzot, to become a reference.
The first part puts the ceramist's entire career into perspective, from his training as a sculptor to the discovery of ceramics, from his first attempts and first stoneware pieces to his natural collaboration with sculptors (Denys Puech, Albert Marque, etc.) or his work on large-scale decoration.
His most famous production with painters is the subject of an unprecedented re-contextualization and demonstrates the richness of a contribution that brought together nearly twenty artists, including Henri Matisse, André Derain, Maurice de Vlaminck, Mary Cassatt, Auguste Renoir, Maximilien Luce, Kees van Dongen, Georgette Agutte, Pierre Girieud. His friendships with certain collectors or painters, such as Maurice Denis, Aristide Maillol or Jean Puy, will be evoked allowing the reader to enter the heart of the Asnières studio and discover the unique richness of André Metthey's work.
