Fascination with the past has always existed. History was already very popular in the 19th century. It was in the 19th century that several new nations emerged and others strengthened their position on the international stage. During the Romantic period, there was a renewed interest in the Dukes of Burgundy, from Philip the Bold to the glorious Charles V. The Dukes of Burgundy of the 15th and 16th centuries returned to the forefront in several European countries. In Belgium, they appear in paintings, literature, and sculpture as patriarchs of this new country. But the representation of sovereigns varies enormously from one country to another. What do these representations tell us about our vision of the past in the 19th century? And about how we understand our history today? In A Brilliant Past: The Burgundians as Seen by the Romantics, you look at the past in a contemporary context, with a critical eye and a changing perspective. The exhibition halls of the Museum Hof van Busleyden are transformed into a monumental 19th-century museum, evoking, through some forty works, nostalgia for the grandeur of yesteryear. A Brilliant Past is a collaboration between the Museum Hof van Busleyden and the Royal Monastery of Brou in Bourg-en-Bresse (France).
