This book marks the culmination of Matt Black's long-term series, which began in 2013. The Magnum photographer traveled across the United States, covering nearly 160,000 km, drawing up an uncompromising inventory of America today, focusing in particular on these peripheral cities and the precariousness of everyday life, through powerful, meticulously composed black and white images.
What began as a story about isolated communities has, over the years, become a portrait of an increasingly divided country rife with inequality and disparities. Completed in 2020, after visiting the last state, this series is accompanied by the artist's travel journal, which combines his personal notes with collections of found objects.
