Little known during her lifetime, Alice Neel (1900-1984) has emerged today as a major figure in American painting, notably thanks to the acuity of her portraits of New York's diverse communities. A communist sympathizer, Neel was interested throughout her life in injustices and inequalities, highlighting racial segregation as well as discrimination against women and homosexuals. Her female nudes, painted without compromise, made her an icon of feminism. Centered on two themes - the class struggle and the struggle of the sexes - Alice Neel, A Committed Look explores the political and social dimensions of a powerful painting in light of previously unpublished quotes and remarks from the artist. As one of the few French-language catalogues devoted to the painter, the catalogue is based around four essays and an extensive anthology accompanying some sixty works illuminated by numerous quotations from the artist.
