First book dedicated to Scottish-born photographer Alexander Henderson (Edinburgh, 1831–Montreal, 1913), an artist in love with the Canadian wilderness. Arriving in Montreal in 1855 at the age of 24, Alexander Henderson never stopped exploring the territory of his new country and expressing in his landscapes the emotions aroused by the forests, the rivers, the ice and the snow of Canadian winters. An atmosphere of serenity and contemplation runs through his work, imbued with romanticism. Life in the woods, as well as the atmosphere of the city and the beauty of the frost, are rendered with the same sensuality that sets him apart from his contemporaries. More than 170 reproductions faithful to the period prints take us on a journey through the seasons, from Montreal to the remote regions of Quebec and Western Canada during the second half of the nineteenth century. Two texts present, on the one hand, the artist's biography and, on the other, the influence of the British colonial regime on the style and subjects of Henderson's photographs. This work will delight collectors and historians of Canadian photography, as well as all enthusiasts of nature and landscapes.
