Painter, draughtsman, and engraver active in Regensburg, Albrecht Altdorfer (circa 1480–1538) is a major artist of the German Renaissance, even if he remains less well known than other masters of his generation, such as Albrecht Dürer or Lukas Cranach. This monographic work aims to present the richness and diversity of the work of Albrecht Altdorfer, an artist endowed with a great capacity for formal and iconographic invention, a pioneer in the genres of landscape and architecture. It highlights his stature as a Renaissance artist, both highly original and perfectly aware of the artistic creation of his contemporaries. All aspects of his artistic life are studied, with a selection of drawings, engravings, paintings, and objects. The approach adopted is both chronological and thematic, while reserving sections for the different genres in which Altdorfer's work was particularly important and innovative, such as landscape, goldsmithing and architecture.
