A brilliant illustrator and satirist with considerable influence, Albert Robida (1848-1926) remained famous for his futuristic frescoes, such as The Twentieth Century or Electric Life, or for his great press cartoons. He is sometimes seen as a precursor of science fiction, a visionary prophet of 20th century societies, or even the inventor before the time of television, the telephone and air travel... Against these somewhat anachronistic shortcuts, this work aims to place Robida's great anticipations in their context, that of the satirical press and its targets, but also that of the logic of laughter in the 19th century: transport, the media, women, technophilia, shows... it is the entire culture of the time that is sifted through his satirical verve through a technique of exaggeration that leads him to tirelessly imagine what the future might bring about from the mutations that profoundly transformed the late 19th century.
A CNRS researcher at the ENS in Lyon, Claire Barel-Moisan specializes in 19th-century novels, science in the press and literature, and the science fiction novel.
Professor of Literature at the University of Paris Nanterre, Matthieu Letourneux is a specialist in popular and media cultures.
