Around 1900, the painter, draftsman and etcher Albert Baertsoen (1866-1922) enjoyed great internationally renowned for his prints muted and melancholic of Ghent, his hometown. He knew how to express in a significant way the characteristic fin-de-siècle malaise and was not long in to be considered the artist par excellence of "the dead city”, a theme also very present in the literature of the time. But Baertsoen was much more than "the painter of Ghent", an honorary title that his contemporaries awarded him. He was not less admired for his creations made in cities like Bruges, Nieuwpoort, Veere, Amsterdam and London. Moreover, he was appreciated as engraver on the international scene. And it is perhaps his engraved work which constitutes, today, the most well-known aspect of his art. In parallel with the exhibition at the MSK in Ghent, This work reveals for the first time the work of Baertsoen in all his originality and complexity. Various contributions also depict it for us. as a well-informed intermediary in the world exhibitions and a generous personality, which had an impressive international network and counted among his friends the principal Belgian and foreign artists of his time.
