5,000 Greek, Buddhist, and Islamic sites... For a century, the French Archaeological Delegation in Afghanistan has been cataloguing the heritage of one of the most unstable countries on the planet. This book aims to provide an overview of this research, while highlighting the importance of the archaeological heritage, museum collections, and built heritage of this country, which still faces a latent threat.
The DAFA, although it constitutes the guiding thread of the discourse, is therefore not the only one: throughout the work, the emergence and constitution of Afghan heritage services, the diversification of research fields, the arrival of foreign missions other than French ones, the questions of conservation and restoration of works, that of the preservation of archaeological and heritage sites, the evolution of archaeological documentation are discussed.
The primary intention is therefore to retrace the gradual discovery of Afghanistan's ancient history, through the men and women, archaeologists, curators, historians, but also workers employed on the excavations, Afghans or foreigners. It is also to offer readers a journey through time and the discovery of a fascinating country, if only for its landscapes.

Afghanistan, Shadows and Legends exhibition, presented at the Musée national des Arts asiatiques - Guimet, Paris, from October 26, 2022 to February 6, 2023.
