This first demotic paleography is both a detailed study of the evolution of writing and a working tool. The development of the outline of each sign is observed and compared to hieratic forms, based on the papyrus collection of the Cairo Museum dating from the reign of Taharqa until the end of the Ptolemaic period. The paleography presents the hieroglyphic sign or group of signs, its appearance in "abnormal hieratic" as well as the forms attested in "early demotic, "early Ptolemaic and "late Ptolemaic" while taking into account regional differences (Upper Egypt, Middle Egypt, Lower Egypt). Each form is accompanied by the precise reference to the papyrus. Summary tables allow a broad visualization of the evolution of Egyptian writing: hieroglyphic, hieratic and demotic.
