Between the 5th and 3rd centuries BC, Gallic populations erected a monumental structure on a small peak in the Mercantour massif. Within the walls, far from the ordinary world, aristocrats and warrior elites held enigmatic ritual banquets during which the weaving of hierarchical and power bonds was reaffirmed. Beneath the rubble of this building, abandoned more than 2,200 years ago, archaeologists and scientists have discovered floors strewn with weapons, jewelry, human remains, and leftovers from meals. Through these fragmented remains, the history of these distant ancestors is revisited in light of this new data, which overturns our perception of the Gauls of the Mercantour. Beyond the gestures linked to the ceremonial of these banquets which refer to well-known Hellenistic practices, we discover a population, numerous, hierarchical, warlike and integrated into a long-distance commercial network.
